Mauritius Short Film Festival - Festival International du court Metrage de Maurice 2008

From Friday to Sunday, there was an Short Film Festival in Mauritius. All showings were free and open to the public. Great initiative by the Centre Culturel Charles Baudelaire (http://www.ccb.intnet.mu/).

I did not have a chance to go any showings except for the Sunday Showing. The Sunday night showing was at ABC theatre, Rose Hill and it was solely for Mauritian movies/productions. As it was free, I thought it would have been very packed, but there were many open seats. I guess either people did not know about it or people are not too interested in that kind of stuff here.

They had a great selection of short films by mauritian producers - 8 movies in total, some as long as 30 minutes and some as short as 10 minutes. All the movies were in either French or Creole. I enjoyed them a lot.

The one I loved the most was the cartoon 'The Adventures of TiKoulou' (http://tikoulou.com/). Very colorful and professionally made and great story too to showcase Mauritius to the younger crowds.

They all had great photography, great camera work and good acting, BUT the stories were a little weak.

Friday night dinner with Bhavik and Pravin at Lahore Karahi

Pravin and Bhavik, two other Mauritian friends in the bay area came to the city yesterday night to go to the Asian Massive concert. We met at my place and decided to have an Indian dinner. My favorite Indian place in the city is in the tenderloin - Lahore Karahi (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lahore-karahi-san-francisco)  at the corner of Jones and O'Farrell. Unlike the other similar style Indian places in the city, Lahore Karahi cooks everything from scratch rather than stock sauces and stock meats mixed together + also it is BYOB without a corkage fee. We ordered
  • Tandoori Fish
  • Aloo Ghobi (potatoes and Califlower)
  • Chicken Karahi
  • Dal Massala
  • Naan

Vietnamese Food at 'La Vie' restaurant on Geary

Yesterday evening, we were supposed to meet at Ocean Beach to hang out and make a bonfire, but when we got to the beach, it was very foggy, cold and windy. We decided it was not a good idea to be stay there. We decided to go have dinner in the richmond district. Delphine wanted to go to 'La Vie' vietnamese restaurant as it's supposed to be the only one place serving Lok-Lok dish in SF. The service was not that good. I got water like after half an hour and the waiter kept on ignoring us. But the food was decent. I had the Five Spice Roast Chicken dish which was delicious, but pictures below are

  • Chicken Spring Rolls
  • Beef Lok-Lok
  • Five Spice Chicken
  • Satay
  • Mixed Vegetables and Chicken

Thai Dinner in the tenderloin with John

My ex housemate from the Memphis days - John Satumba is visiting San Francisco for a conference. We met after work today for dinner and strolled around town a bit and ended up in the tenderloin for dinner at a thai place - Bang San Thai on Jones and Ofarell. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/bang-san-thai-cuisine-san-francisco)

Here's what we ate...

  • Vegetarian Spring Rolls
  • Fish cakes
  • Whole Tilapia with spicy sauce
  • Green Curry Salmon
  • Mixed Vegetables
  • Steamed Rice

The food was delicious, cheap and too much.

I had 4 pieces as u see in the pic below..Shrimp and Chives, Chicken and Vegetable, Shark fin steamed dumplings and fried meat dumpling.

All that for $2.20!

The place is called House of Dimsum and is found close to Jackson st and Grant St. (http://www.yelp.com/biz/house-of-dim-sum-san-francisco ).

Gota love working close to Chinatown :)

Bourbon and Branch - Modern day speakeasy in San Francisco

Last night, I went to have some drinks with Drew, Hilla and Monica at Bourbon and Branch. Hilla is visiting from the Israel office and I thought B&B was one of the nice SF things to show her. Bourbon and Branch tries to have a re-enactment of the prohibition days, trying to be a modern day speakeasy. Its at O'Farell and Jones street in the core midst of the tenderloin.

There's no sign or anything to identify it. All there is a door and a buzzer. You ring in the buzzer and they ask you for the secret word. For every day, they have a secret word and you get the secret word when you make a reservation. Our secret word was 'owl'. The mood, atmosphere, music and setup is very nice inside and it did actually make me feel that I took a trip back in the past. Also, once inside they have a secret wall disguised in a bookshelf. The bookshelf opens up and you can go to the back bar.

They have a huge drink list - some 20 pages or so long. Too many choices. We all got cocktails from the B&B favorites section though. I got the 'Cucumber Gimlet' cocktail. It was so gooooood and refreshing. You could taste the cucumber's freshness in every sip of the drink.
