Boat from Manhattan to Staten Island - Statue of Liberty

The statue of Liberty is one the most recognizabe symbols in the USA. From Manhattan NY, there's a free ferry boat that goes to Staten island (commuter boat), but on the way to the Island, we get to see the marvelous Statue and the backdrop of the Manhattan Skyline.

From Wikipedia about the Statue of Liberty - "The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Enlightening the WorldFrenchLa Liberté éclairant le monde) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue has become an icon of freedom and of the United States."

Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City

I visited the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Musuem while in NY. It's a musuem built on top of an old army Aircraft carrier - the Intrepid. It was interesting seeing the evolution of fighter planes and helicopters from the early days to what they are right now..

My last night in NYC.. View of Manhattan Skyline from Brooklyn Waterfront

Already my last nite in NYC. One of the things that I had not done during these past few weeks was to cross over the brooklyn bridge and see the Manhattan Skyline from that perspective. Took the subway to that side today and admired the beautiful skylike at dusk when all the buildings started to light up their lights and walked back the bridge to Manhattan. One of the most spectacular skylines ever !

Being a tourist at the United Nations in NY !

I usually don't do the too touristic route, but I got the chance to get a VIP tour of the United Nations in NYC. I went for it and did the touristy thing - Got pictures of me sitting in the security council United States Seat, of me sitting in the Mauritius seat in the General Assembly and posed in front of the Main speaker pedestal when the Secretary General addresses the people. Reminded me of Model United Nations (MUN) that we had done in high school once. It's the most touristic thing I did in this trip, but yet all these places are where so many decisions affecting a lot of our everyday life are made !

Soft Shell Crab - it's the season in NY !

It's soft shell crab season in the East Coast. Could not miss the opportunity to have a couple while here - went to Great NY Noodletown which has been raved for the crabs in nyt and yelp... Enjoyed them !

I thought soft shell was a different species of crab until I googled it and found out it's just regular crab in a different stage of their lifecycle. Crabs have to molt as they grow bigger.. i.e they have get out of their current shell and they've outgrown it. The soft shell crab is basically just the cran which just got out of their old shell. Their body hardens within a few hours of molting with a new shell if they stay in water. So it's tough to harvest them and hence not a year round delicacy.

New York's Little India - Jackson Heights in Queens

There are many ethnic neighborhoods in New York for the different communities and groups of people living here from the so many countries. There's Chinatown[S], Little Italy, Puerto Rican Barios and African neighborhoods in Harlem, Little Russia in Brighton Beach, Curry Hill, Curry Row, Little India etc.. It's so great to have so much of these cultures concentrated here and be able to visit/experience a bit of the cultural/culinary aspects of these countries cultures without having to travel there. I visited Jackson Heights in Queens a couple of weeks ago and it's the Little India of NYC. I almost felt like I was in India :)

Funny while I was there, I was just walking about and two persons overtook me on the street and they were speaking in Maurician Creole. It's so rare to find people speaking creole in the US. I stopped them and introduced myself and told them I am from Mauritius too and when I asked him what is doing in the US - he said he's the Ambassador of Mauritus to the United Nations - Milan Meetarbhan. Funny I bumped into our ambassador out of the blues.
