Soft Shell Crab - it's the season in NY !

It's soft shell crab season in the East Coast. Could not miss the opportunity to have a couple while here - went to Great NY Noodletown which has been raved for the crabs in nyt and yelp... Enjoyed them !

I thought soft shell was a different species of crab until I googled it and found out it's just regular crab in a different stage of their lifecycle. Crabs have to molt as they grow bigger.. i.e they have get out of their current shell and they've outgrown it. The soft shell crab is basically just the cran which just got out of their old shell. Their body hardens within a few hours of molting with a new shell if they stay in water. So it's tough to harvest them and hence not a year round delicacy.

Eaten at : http://www.yelp.com/biz/tasty-hand-pulled-noodles-new-york

Nothing beats a freshly made noodles in a great broth. I sat facing the kitchen and was amazed to see the chef make noodles from scratch starting from the dough and twisting and turning it till I had what I had in my bown :)

Sunday Green Dumplings

I had a craving for dumplings today and decided to make some - usually chinese dumplings are made with ground pork meat (more fatty). Decided to use ground turkey instead though.. not too bad of a substitute. Mixed the ground meat with ground garlic and ginger, salt, chives and thyme.. then added my own special ingredient to it (non-chinese) - grated chayotte. The chayotte provides lots of moisture and mushy feeling to the dumplings. Perfect compliment in any dumpling I personally think. I steamed half of it and fried half of it.

Chicken with Explosive Chilli Peppers - Hottest Dish I've ever had...

Tonight I had the hottest ever dish in my life - Chicken with Explosive Chili Peppers at the Z & Y Schezuan Chinese restaurant in San Francisco Chinatown. I think it had more peppers than chicken - very tasty though. I can't wait to try all the other hot schezuan specialities at Z & Y.

Singaporean Food @ Lee Hou with Kuben and Lia

Kuben and Lia, two friends from university, were in San Francisco for a conference a couple of weeks ago. Took them to Lee Hou (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lee-hou-restaurant-san-francisco) on Clement Street for some good Singaporean Food. The singapore curry chicken was the best ever curry I've had !! The yelp reviews don't look so good, but I loved the food !!

Saturday Morning Dim Sum with Pravin and Bhavik

Last Friday night, Pravin and Bhavik had stayed at my place after we finished Asian Massive at 1015.

On Saturday morning, decided to take them to Chinatown for brunch. We decided to do some Dim Sum at one of the many dim-sum places on Jackson Street between Kearny and Grant.

We went there around 9:30a.m and it was very very packed. We were probably the only non-chinese people in there.

They pass by with the different dim sum dishes every few minutes and we can pick what we want. We got 6 dishes and that fed us good for all afternoon :)

Chinese Dinner on Sunday night with Levi and Greg

After Stern Grove yesterday, we decided to go have some dinner. As we were in the neighborhood, we decided to go to the Chinatown in the Richmond (Clement Street). We found this place around 5th and Clement - a Singaporean/Malaysian place, which I did not note the name (but its next to Genki, the japanese crepe place and exactly opposite of Burma Superstar)

We had the Black Pepper Crab - (entire big crab  - for $15.99, I think its a bargain as everywhere I have seen, Crab dishes usually cost a lot more) and we had the fresh Steamed Black Bass.
