Las Vegas 2010 trip

A few weeks ago, I got a free trip to Vegas - ticket and hotel for one week - courtesy of a bug on the expedia website. I happened to be online when the bug was posted and was pretty surprised that it actually worked and I was among the lucky ones to have gotten the free deal. I decided to go there to work for that week rather than work from SF. While I stayed in my hotel room and worked most of the days I was there, I did go to a few shows at night. I watched a hypnotist show which was awesome, watched the Blue Man Group show in which I fell asleep and the best show was 'Le Reve' at the Wynn. That show was spectacular. Lots of water acrobatics, divings, great special effects and costumes.. Really loved that show ! I had gotten the ticket at one of the many Vegas Half price ticket booths and was seated in the splash zone in the front seat and of course as the name says, I did get splashed every now and then :) Anyways, enjoy some pics that I took while there.

Lake Tahoe 2010 trip

Jai and Aruna had a timeshare in Tahoe that they could only use for the weekend. Being the friend that does not work at an office, they graciously offered me to work from there if I wanted for the week. It was nice for a change from San Francisco to work walking distance from the Heavenly ski lift. Everyday I'd ski a couple of hours and work for the rest of the day accessing the internet tethering through my iphone to do my work. Was a perfect winter getaway and we even had a big storm one of the days - about 6 inches of snow and blizzards up in the mountain. I did go up and there was like no visibility few feet in front of you and unseen obstacles all over the course. Different skiing experience skiing in a blizzard :)

Sunday Green Dumplings

I had a craving for dumplings today and decided to make some - usually chinese dumplings are made with ground pork meat (more fatty). Decided to use ground turkey instead though.. not too bad of a substitute. Mixed the ground meat with ground garlic and ginger, salt, chives and thyme.. then added my own special ingredient to it (non-chinese) - grated chayotte. The chayotte provides lots of moisture and mushy feeling to the dumplings. Perfect compliment in any dumpling I personally think. I steamed half of it and fried half of it.

Is there something like too much powder??

The weekend was perfect summer-like skiing conditions, but this early morning, we had a mega big storm and when I got up, there was like 5-6 inches of snow on the ground. Was lucky, I am staying only a few blocks from the Nevada stagecoach heavenly lift (only lift that's open.. koz too much strong winds). Went up for a couple of hours of skiing in the morning (glad I got the pass for these short time runs). While powder is nice, I think as everything too much of it ain't that fun.. it was snowing the entire time i was up on the slopes and visibility was very minimal. Did a couple of runs in the morning and came back to finish up some work.

Annie's White Elephant Gift Exchange and Dinner Party !

Yesterday night, Annie hosted her annual White Elephant Gift Exchange and End of Year Christmas Dinner party. As usual, good food, good company and some interesting gifts. The most funny gift I thought was a box of Man's underwear and suprisingly, people wanted that bad and on the second round when you can steal each other's gift, that was well sought after and as usual Joel got the sex gifts and least but not least, Annie got the Cookie Sutra book.. I can't wait to try her new cookies when she bakes them :)

Post Thanksgiving Dinner (Indo-Mauritian Food)

Like the french saying says "Jamais deux sans trois" (Never Three without two), with a pre and current thanksgiving dinner, it could not have concluded the thanksgiving period without a Post Thanksgiving dinner. Jay and Aruna hosted a post thanksgiving dinner at their place among a few Mauritians and rather than traditional american thanksgiving food, we had traditional Mauritian food. Went in early and helped Aruna cooked the Dal Puri.

Dal Puri is the yellow looking bread on the food plate and it's rather time consuming to cook. You first have to boil some kind of peas, crush it in into fine granules, fill each dough ball with a bit of the crushed pea, close it, flatten it and then cooked in a flat iron pan. While Caroline and Aruna did the dough, filling and flattening, me and Alex were assigned to flat iron cooking duties, spreading the flattened dough with oil and turning then after they puff up.

Thanks Jay and Aruna for hosting such a great dinner with such great Mauritian food !
